Russia can be visited at any time of year, yet understanding the local seasons will prove invaluable in planning your journey. This insight will guide you in choosing the perfect time to depart.

The Different Seasons in Russia

Spring

This season typically begins in early March. It is marked by the melting of snow. Temperatures only begin to rise noticeably in May, and daylight hours lengthen considerably. Spring is also when Russians celebrate an ancient tradition called "Maslenista," also known as "Butter Week." The festivities last an entire week, with various celebrations including theatrical performances, games, fireworks, parades, and much more.

Summer

The summer season typically spans from June to August. Sunshine prevails throughout this period, and Russians make the most of it by venturing outdoors. Many city dwellers escape to the countryside to spend time in their summer cottages, known as "dachas."

Peak tourist season in Russia is often recorded during summer, particularly between July and August. During these months, travelers flock to major Russian cities such as Moscow and Saint-Petersburg, as well as the Golden Ring towns to explore their attractions.

Naturally, summer tourism also means higher prices. Airfare and accommodations see a noticeable increase during this period.

In August, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow is closed to the public, as is the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint-Petersburg.

Exploring Siberia in summer is highly recommended, as conditions are particularly favorable for undertaking an expedition into this vast region of Russian territory.

Autumn

Beginning typically in September and ending in November, autumn is arguably the shortest season in Russia. This period is ideal for a visit to Moscow, as there are fewer vacationers. Despite the gradually intensifying cold, summer's warmth hasn't entirely dissipated. It is particularly in October that temperatures begin to drop noticeably and the first snowfalls appear. The visual spectacle offered by nature at this time will surely delight landscape photographers.

Winter

Russia is known worldwide for its harsh and glacial winters. This season begins in December and ends in February. However, snowfall can extend well into April.

In winter, days are particularly short, and in certain regions of the country, thermometers can plummet to -50°C or even lower, particularly in eastern Siberia.

Although the cold is constantly felt during winter, this season nonetheless proves perfect for traveling to Russia. You will have the privilege of enjoying the pleasures of skiing, among other activities. You will also benefit from reduced fares for airfare as well as favorable rates for hotel accommodations.
