History
The history of Sergiev Posad revolves around that of its Orthodox monastery. This monastery, built in the 14th century by Saint Sergius of Radonezh, the patron saint of Russiaâ€, is considered the heart of Russian Orthodoxy. Boris Godunov, the adventurer who became "tsar of all the Russias", was also buried there. The monastery also served as a refuge for Peter the Great during the Streltsy Uprising.
Monks began living there from the 15th century onward. In 1774, the main church came under the authority of the Patriarch of Moscow.
Ivan the Terrible transformed the place by constructing churches and sumptuous buildings. The most famous among them is the Cathedral of the Trinity, which was one of the first masterpieces of Muscovite Russiaâ€. The frescoes were created by the great painter Andrei Rublev.
